The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has raised concerns over non-payment of refunds to student beneficiaries by some institutions, despite receiving disbursement from the board.
This issue was addressed through a circular released on Monday, 29th of June, 2026, and signed by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director, Strategic Communications of NELFUND.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has noted with concern reports of some tertiary institutions delaying or refusing to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before NELFUND disbursements, as well as arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges,” the circular read in part.
Meanwhile, the Student Loan Scheme is an initiative by the Presidency, under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), that aims to remove the financial barriers among students of higher education, not to create additional burdens to them.
NELFUND therefore assured to engage the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that due refunds are made to eligible students and that institutional charges remain fair, transparent, and consistent with the objectives of the Scheme, adding that: “it remains committed to protecting the interests of students and preserving the integrity of this landmark national intervention.”
