| UDUS Matriculated Students |
The newly matriculated students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) have expressed mixed reactions following their formal admission into the institution, sharing hopes, concerns, and expectations as they begin their academic journey.
The matriculation ceremony, held on 4th of March,2026 at S.A.S Galadanchi convocation arena marked the official induction of fresh students into the academic community. While many described the moment as fulfilling and historic, others highlighted pressing challenges that require attention.
Abdullahi Musa, a student from the Faculty of Social Sciences, described his matriculation as a dream come true.
“Today feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Gaining admission into UDUS is not easy, so I’m grateful. I’m excited about the academic opportunities here and I look forward to making my family proud,” he said.
Another student, Umar Aminat, from the Faculty of Management Sciences expressed optimism about the quality of education at the university.
“I chose UDUS because of its academic reputation. After today’s ceremony, I feel more motivated. I just hope the university continues to provide the facilities we need to succeed,” she noted.
Concerns Over Facilities
However, not all reactions were entirely celebratory. Ibrahim Mubarak, an English and Literary student, raised concerns about infrastructure, particularly hostel accommodation and electricity supply.
“The ceremony was inspiring, but we cannot ignore the issues of power supply and hostel conditions. Many of us rely on phones for studying. Stable electricity is essential for our academic performance,” he said.
He asserted that the hostel conditions are getting better, new doors are already fixed, the environment is getting cleaner but it is not enough.
“We need more improvements. Most of the water tanks are either dirty or the water taps are broken.” he said.
A similar concern was shared by Muhammad Aisha of the Faculty of Arts, who pointed to security.
“I am happy to be here, but there is a need for improved sanitation in school hostels. Security is also important, especially for female students. We want to feel safe and comfortable while pursuing our studies,” she stated.
Call for Student Engagement
Meanwhile, Chinedu Okafor, a student in the Faculty of Education and Extension Services, emphasized the importance of student participation in campus affairs.
“Matriculation is not just about wearing gowns and taking pictures. It is about understanding our responsibilities as students. I encourage my colleagues to engage with the Students’ Union, Campus Journalism and take active part in activities that promote our welfare,” he said.
The matriculation ceremony signals the start of a new academic journey for the students, who now join the broader UDUS community with aspirations for academic excellence and personal development.
Don't Joke With Your Grades — SU Chairman
When advising the newly matriculated students, Comrade Tasiu Aminu, the SU CTC Chairman said the newly matriculated students should wear his name with pride and responsibility.
“100-level is the foundation of your entire academic journey, do not joke with your grades.” he said.
He emphasized that what you build now will determine how strong you stand in the years ahead. Attend your lectures, study intentionally, and give your best from the very beginning.
“Know the rules before the rules know you.” Read every line of the Students’ Handbook and let it guide your conduct. Discipline, focus, and integrity will distinguish you.”
He concluded by saying they are not just here to pass exams, but to build a future and make the journey count.
Matriculation is the Oath — UDUS VC
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Garba started by laying much importance on the significance of the oath the students had taken. He said they are no more a ‘merely admitted’ but now a full member of the university community.
“The oath is not just a promise; it is a commitment to pursue your studies with integrity, to revere this institution and make the absolute use of most of the opportunity given.”.
In assurance, he said the university has provided for every student —what he or she needed to be able to excel and come out victorious.
“The university promises to support you, challenge you to make you grow, and become thoughtful and capable scholars and individuals."
